Characters and Magic Specialization
As stated in the rules, Illuminessence is an account per character site. This is mainly to separate the amount of “Essence” your characters accumulate through posting and participating in events. Essence is like experience, or money, and can be used to purchase new magic spells and magic specializations for your character.
Most of the questions you will have about character creation will be answered in the Character Application. However, Magic Specialization, a huge part of what sets each mage apart, will be covered in depth here.
Magic Specialization
Each magic user is good at different types of magic. Some use their magic for battle, some for healing, and others use it to create helpful items and enchantments for other mages. In the character application, there are two sections for a character’s Specialization, their Primary Specialization and their Secondary Specialization. At first, a character is allowed one of each, but more can be obtained through spending accumulated Essence.
Primary Specialization is the type of magic the character is best at. Because of this, a character starts out with three spells under the Primary Specialization, one of which is at intermediate level. When adding more spells into your specialization, there are no limits to the number and level of the spells.
Secondary Specialization is a type of magic that the character knows, but could still improve on. Because of this, a character starts out with two beginner level spells under their Secondary Specialization. When adding more spells into this specialization, a character can only have up to six spells and they cannot be over intermediate level. If you wish to gain more powerful spells, it is advised to advance it to a Primary Specialization through the shop.
Specialization Categories
Specializations are pretty free form, and we want members to be able to come up with their own ideas for interesting types of magic uses. However, there are three main types of categories for Specializations: Offensive Magic, Support Magic, and Crafting Magic.
Offensive Magic is pretty straightforward. One can be a powerful War Mage, casting all sorts of destructive spells. Or a Spellsword, a mage with a little more meat on his bones, can infuse his weapons with elemental power, combining strength and magic for a unique attack.
Support Magic is for those who wish to help their allies more than themselves, usually through combat situations. Support magic is not known to damage enemies directly, but instead support those who would take the front lines in a fight. Shrine Maidens can pray to the gods to heal their allies. Some Bards are known to sing songs that invigorate other mages, providing them with greater strength than they would have had before. Witch Doctors are not known for working well with others, but they have terrifying spells that weaken the enemy.
Crafting Magic is for those who wish to use raw materials combined with their magic power to create fantastical items for other mages, or even themselves to use. An Alchemist will use herbs and other plants to magical brew potions. Magicsmiths will craft weapons for mages to use, imbued with different elemental powers. Scribes are known to be able to translate their incantations into a physical form, like scrolls, so other mages can use their magic even if they have not mastered the techniques. Herbalists, while they do not craft new items per say, will still use herbs they find in order to grow new herbs in safer areas for efficient harvesting.
When choosing a Specialization, whatever it may be, make sure that it only fits into one of these categories. If you say your specialization is Fire magic, but you can use both offensive and support spells, you are crossing into two separate categories. Instead, your specialization would be Offensive Fire Magic. Also, make sure the Specialization is specific enough, and even if it does fit into one category, don’t go overboard. A single beginning Alchemist should not know how to brew mighty potions, and grow their own magical herbs, and make magic charms. Always be sure to explain your Specializations and what kinds of magic it entails. This will make your character acceptance process go even smoother.
