Spells and Elements
Spells are very freeform, and like Specializations come in three separate categories: Offensive Spells, Support Spells, and Crafting Spells. When creating spells for your character, please remember that a spell cannot cross into more than one category. Please also remember that the spells must make sense for the Specialization they fall under
Offensive Spells and Support Spells are straightforward enough. One simply needs to create a spell that either attacks an opponent, or helps an ally/weakens an enemy.
However, Crafting also falls under the spell category. Mages that can craft unique items, or grow unique materials need a “spell” to do this. Therefore, if you want to craft a health potion, that would be a spell you need to know first. Since mages craft with a combination of raw materials and their own magic, they need an incantation, and thus a spell, in order to craft new creations. Crafting Spells will also require you to have certain materials to create things, as you can’t create potions and weapons from nothing. You can check our Materials List for some ideas, or you can create your own ingredients.
Spell Levels
Spells also come with three levels of power: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Beginner Level spells are just as they should be, weaker spells that have not yet reached their full potential. It’s a spell any mage could learn with enough practice.
Intermediate Level spells are more powerful than Beginner Level spells. Sometimes they are a more potent version of a Beginner Spell, or sometimes they combine two elements to create new effects.
Advanced Level spells are the highest, more difficult spell a mage can learn. Only Advanced Level spells can have multiple effects, like heal and strengthen an ally at the same time. Like Intermediate Level spells, Advanced Level spells can also combine elements to create destructive and unique new effects.
Elements
To differentiate spells even further, magic is divided up into different elements: Two Origin Elements, Four Primary Elements, and Four Secondary Elements.
The Origin Elements are Light and Dark. They are the elements that said to have spawned the rest of the elements. Both the Primary and the Secondary Elements can fall under the jurisdiction of either Light or Dark, but Light and Dark can also be used in their purest form for spells. It is very difficult to mix them with other Elements, so if you plan on doing this, we ask that you save it for an Advanced Spell only. Otherwise, Light and Dark can be used as the Primary Elements can for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Spells.
The Primary Elements are Water, Wind, Fire, and Earth. Wind and Water fall under the jurisdiction of Light, and Fire and Earth fall under the jurisdiction of Dark. These four elements are the easiest to work with, and the easiest to mix together, though even mixing these would require an Intermediate Level spell.
The Secondary Elements are Lightning, Ice, Metal, and Plant. These four elements are combinations of two adjacent Primary Elements. Lightning is composed of Wind and Fire. Ice is composed of Water and Wind. Metal is composed of Fire and Earth. Plant is composed of Earth and Water. Spells that use these Secondary Elements can be Beginner Level as these Elements occur naturally and thus mix easily.
However, spells can also have a Null Element essentially a source of power that does not correspond to an element, and rather a force like Space, Time, Gravity, and the like. These are also allowed if you have trouble associating a spell you want with a particular element. The only downside is that nothing has a weakness to a Null Element.
When creating spells, please make sure to keep these categories, levels, and elements in mind. They will help you not only create wildly different, and unique spells, but help with speeding up your application process. Whenever you make a new spell, feel free to add it to our Spell List in the Codex to give more in depth information to both the staff and the other members.
