SE ORÆFTA THIRTY NOVEMBER 13 | MALE ASEXUAL TROUBADOUR/CON MAN | |
BRAE LOVET |
★ APPEARANCE
Nothing if not a narcissist, Brae's easily found preening; give him a reflective surface and you'll need to give him a good few minutes to check himself out too. Immediately, his gloves will be at his fringe adjusting it just right, fingers running over skin to check for any visible blemishes and hands going down to fix the slightest hitch in the fabric of his lapel. Brae is a man who prefers to keep himself groomed to an impeccable degree even if he judges his relocation to Dorcha Hollow as something unbefitting for someone like him. It may be a place of refuge of mage and magic-user alike but he just sees it as the sticks – the magical sticks, maybe, but that doesn't make it any better.
Brae reeks of something like fancy lineage in just the way he holds himself. Back straight and shoulders back he sees bad posture indicative of a person's character. He's not too tall – around 5'10" about — but it should be noted that, despite the air of regality he tries to create, he's more used to manual work than he'd like to profess. He's somewhat muscled, particularly in terms of upper arm strength as opposed to anything else, and his hands show definite signs of woodworking and otherwise since young.
It should surprise no-one that Brae uses something like cosmetics. He's definitely no natural blond – the unnatural gold sheen in his hair is the product of dye and a rigid belief that he looks better with it rather that the tawny brown he was born with.
Brae's partial to powders too! Not so much the lighteners some of the upper-class use but more concealers for a few imperfections here and there. It's used for the rather nasty scar along his neck as well as well. An injury from long ago was never quite able to heal without leaving a mark means there's discolouration from below his jawline to right behind his right ear, all of which he tries to cover up with make-up. It's half-successful at concealing it or, at least, more effective than whatever than he tries to put on a far more noticeable marking – a curse — Brae has along his left forearm, something that proves wholly impervious to any powder he has.
Additionally, Brae has never hesitated in spending pretty penny on expensive clothing – appearances are incredibly important in his books. While he's reluctant to stand out too much but he's no stranger to pricey fabrics and pricey tailors. Frankly just anything pricey, with a slight emphasis on high collars and gloves, a slightly unsubtle attempt at covering his insecurities that compose of the scar at his neck and faint callouses on his hands. The latter of which isn't particularly noticeable without his gloves but he is hyper-vigilant when it comes to them anyway, only really taking his gloves off to play music.
His gloves are also his primary weapon – or, rather, the garrotte wire laced on the inside of his gloves. While he keeps a flashy, ornamental-looking dagger rather prominently displayed at his waist, another smaller one usually wrapped against his shin in inside a high boot, he's more partial to the garrotte vil lining his gloves.
Another somewhat more personal reason for his gloves would be that Brae's got that aforementioned curse making its presence known physically on his left arm; the gloves cover that rather well. Roll up a sleeve, however, and one can see lines and lines of an Elfish dialect inscribed on his skin in an inky black, treating him like a living manuscript. For now it's just his forearm but it has been spreading and is likely to continue to given he has little idea of the nature of the jinx. He understands the crux of what appears written on his arm but this is as the human's sole knowledge of Elfish consists of swear words and knowing how to order a pint. Given the painful sensation he gets when a new sentence burns on, plus the original hexer's less than kind opinion of Brae at the time, you can gather the kind of things that are being scrawled on his body.
Brae's fairly indulgent interest in clothes is something that he might struggle with given Dorcha Hollow's lack of the conventional, fancy tailors he's used to. He's acknowledge he'll have to make-do and mend 'til then – doesn't mean he won't complain about it, of course. What probably helps null the complaining for now is a pretty wide collection which has amongst it, of all things, one armour set that looks strikingly like something worn by some anti-mage forces in the non-magic and magic battles a bit back. While Brae used to get plenty of wear out of it it doesn't suit his purposes anymore. Despite this, he's extremely reluctant to dispose of it.
★ PERSONALITY
It is an indisputable fact that Brae fancies himself something bad.
Boisterous, self-centred and painfully vain, it's also an indisputable fact that other people are not quite as charmed by Brae as he is with himself. Regardless, he's been known to tell an okay story – that being said, he'd be rather miserable if a professional troubadour couldn't. Stories of chivalry, star-crossed love and bravery are primarily the tools of Brae's trade. He's got a flair for the regaling tales of whatever an audience wants and he loves it – not only because he likes listening to the sound of his voice.
But even as much as Brae loves to talk he very much loves to listen as well! He's exhilarated by talking to people who know things because he likes knowing thing too. There's no exaggeration about this; the exchange of knowledge thrills him. However, it's partially because he's a fan of appropriating whatever he learns from people to retell in his own stories and style. It's part of the job and Brae likely thinks he can tell it better with a few embezzlements here and there.
After all, “embezzling” the truth comes naturally to Brae. While he'd think it'd be dishonest to call him dishonest it'd be easy to say he's coming from a somewhat biased position, especially since as he sees little reason not to lie. While he understands the moral arguments behind being truthful but remains thoroughly unconvinced by them. Essentially, his insincerity isn't born out of a compulsive desire to lie; instead, he just really does not care by the reasoning of being an honest person. With this in mind it should be unsurprising that Brae worked as a swindler. Con artist would probably be too flattering given his work was not graceful, nor clever, and just efficient enough for Brae to get by.
Brae's amorality is underlined by a lack of empathy towards others; he's very selfish and at most times simply doesn't care for others' wellbeing. However, it should be noted that while he cares very little for morality, he can be incredibly sensitive to people's opinions. Brae does not do well with criticism; while he has never been shy in making it known how brilliant he thinks he is critique or disapproval, no matter how well-thought and kindly meant it may be, is met with dismissal, contempt or possibly aggression.
Alongside Brae's defensiveness comes an envious nature. Despite his high confidence levels, his inability to handle criticism no doubt indicates he has many insecurities. He can easily get incredibly jealous of other people. This often leads to irrational behaviour and decisions spurred by these negative feelings with Brae feeling wholly justified in whatever cruel actions he may take to restore his ego.
At the heart of it all, Brae's flaws ultimately culminate in a controlling and manipulative personality. His hyper-vigilance about his insecurities often leads him to be on edge around people whether he perceives them a threat or not. This paranoia translates into a need to have “power” in interactions with people whom he feels have wronged him, whatever that “power” may be. His irrationality can make him dangerous especially given he often enjoys the following power struggles. In these circumstances Brae will not hesitant to do anything that feeds his narcissism and keep him dominant.
The unhealthy need for control Brae has prevents him from forming deep, genuine connections with people. Yet while he may not be particularly sympathetic he can grow very fond of them and, if he likes someone, their interests can quickly become his – or what he thinks are their interests, anyway. He much prefers people joyous than anything else so, despite issues people can take with his morality, Brae overall has a genuine desire to keep those around him happy.
Despite this all, Brae's typical dishonesty has a wrench in it at the moment. While he may not have been a compulsive liar a curse cast on him means he is now something of a compulsive truther instead. A hex renders him completely unable to lie at some periods of time. Its incidence can be a inconsistent given that Brae is sometimes still capable of stretching facts for story-telling purposes – he dismisses it down to the hexer being drunk at the time but Brae has the unfortunate feeling that there is more to it than that.
likes: music, drinking, clothes he LOVES clothes, leather especially, makeup, bustling towns, talking, listening, instruments, travelling, rabbit meat, writing.
dislikes: villages and even smaller communities, lamb, most animals while alive except for his mare, silence, ingenues.
★ HISTORY
Brae's relocation to Dorcha Hollow was not spurred by any genuine want to find comfort in those alongside those rejected for their magic. Instead, it was a move out of necessity and partially motivated by a curse that renders him inconsistently unable to lie. Right now, being dishonest is very, very difficult. He wants a fix immediately for that and thinks the magic camp is his best bet for that – a small vacation from work doesn't sound too bad either.
Primarily Brae worked as troubadour before the move. Failing the “marketability” of that he'd turn to cons, both professions something he'd chosen following the end of an apprenticeship with a famous luthier and crafter of instruments ten years ago. The luthier was a Dwarven man who built up as a reputation as “se Oræfta” over nearly two hundred years, an artisan who had rejected the blacksmith's forge and instead dedicated his life to crafting close to indestructible string instruments.Se Oræfta was a man wholly talentless when it came to music but skilled with magic – he focused on perfecting his craft and was a long admirer of what he perceived to be high Elven and human culture, their sophistication and culture of music being true class. But when he was two centuries old he grew concerned of his lineage and felt it was necessary to take on an heir to carry on his name in the event of his passing; Brae was his sixth attempt at a potential successor.
Brae started his apprenticeship as a luthier at eight. Before that, he was born in a major town in one of the colder parts of Talamh Liath. His father was something of a musician as well, the brother of a Baron but who became bitter after an injury to his arm during a celebration rendered him unable to play, and his mother was a courtier whose magical ability was kept rather quiet. The circumstances of Brae's birth were the result of one affair followed by a rushed marriage. Several months after the ceremony he and his twin brother were born, both possessing some degree of magic power.
Growing up Brae's early life was a stark contrast to contrast to the set-up at Dorcha Hollow; he lived in a bustling, busy town and in relative wealth. While where he lived got its fair share of unique travellers he grew up in mostly human company. Understandably, working under a travelling luthier was a stark contrast to his early life, an indentureship was bore following a deal his father made with se Oræfta. Brae has only returned to his birthplace twice since then.
Brae's mentor's teaching methods were unorthodox. The name he used, se Oræfta, literally meant “the craftsman”. He refused to go by little else in reference to his chosen craft and Brae was never to refer to the man as his birth name of Rodir. Apprenticeship meant he discovered much about the craftsman and Rodir was a dwarf with a divine ego and an obsession with high culture and magic. Se Oræfta despised mages that didn't involve themselves with what he thought was the civilised nature of courts. He further thought magic was being sullied by the users of it whom were in poverty or lived in isolation from ruling classes, and Brae holds similar beliefs to this day.
Brae's indentureship focused little on crafting instruments to begin with; instead, a majority of Rodir's teaching was focused on music and its theory. Alongside this was an approach that was both strict and overbearing. While Rodir smothered Brae with affection and praise, often without call, if the apprentice slipped up he'd be treated with unexplained isolation and contempt – a polarising teaching method if any. Regardless, Brae was brought up with a heavy emphasis in music and what his mentor considered culture – hours spent playing the vielle and pressing on its strings until his fingertips were raw and bleeding — alongside travelling across Talamh Liath for se Oræfta's work.
It was a relationship that ended when se Oræfta informed Brae that he intended not to make him his successor in any right. Brae strangled Rodir several days later. A vielle string was rung around his mentor's neck, lines on Brae's calloused hands from how tight he'd been pulling.
From then on Brae took on the name of his mentor – he felt like he had earn it, after all. However, in he dealt little with crafting instruments and his usage of it fell out of use; instead, Brae found himself associating with the those anti-magic factions growing across Talamh Liath and even joining one. After a brief affair with one non-magic soldier, he waded deeper into anti-magic territory, cautious of using his magic but soon finding little problem by taking advantage of people's prejudices and fears to get by, even during the conflicts.
Brae was happy with this existence up 'til when a trick too ambitious on an elf has rendered Brae with that aforementioned hex. He'd rather go without randomly divulging in long bouts of truths – the elfish obscenities that are now on his arm are uncalled for in his opinion. He's fairly uninterested in Dorcha Hollow despite all the effort he took to get there – he reasons it blithely as different strokes for different folks — but he's willing to stay there if he gets what he wants.
Nothing if not a narcissist, Brae's easily found preening; give him a reflective surface and you'll need to give him a good few minutes to check himself out too. ★ MAGIC
PRIMARY SPECIALIZATION
GLÍWCRÆFT – SUPPORT MAGIC, BARD
Brae specialises in magic through music as a bard. Harnessing the null element of sound, he is able to cast status-inflicting effects and buffs through song. For this, he typically uses a musical instrument, most usually a vielle but Brae is familiar with several other instruments in the viol family. It is possible that this magic could be utilised through singing but its effects would be less powerful – also, Brae thinks he is a terrible singer and would prefer not to – a bit of an exaggeration maybe but he's not nothing close of an exceptional voice. As his magic depends on the null element sound Brae's magic would not work on anyone unable to hear his music and obviously would be rendered defenceless while playing an instrument.
ÁMYRGAÞ – MAKE MERRY!, NULL ELEMENT
Brae is capable of magically inducing effects similar to alcohol intoxication in people through music. By playing a song he is at first able to trigger feelings of genuine euphoria followed by impaired coordination. This can descend into further coordination problems for listeners such as temporary ataxia alongside other effects such as poorer judgement and mood swings. Frankly, Ámyrgaþ's effects can be inconsistent and some people can respond differently to it – for example, some listeners' experience of euphoria can be extremely limited in time and may instead experience low mood afterwards. At a further stage, this song could possibly be able to induce nausea and physical sickness and long periods of listening could lead to memory loss and a potential hangover. For now, Brae's music just makes people quite drunk.
SE GALDOGALERE – THE ENCHANTER, NULL ELEMENT
By playing a song dedicated to an ancient magic user Brae is able to bolster the spells of other magic users. As it is only at beginner level, the effects of this spell are somewhat limited but will still otherwise strengthen another magic user's spells. If focused on one person, the spell's boosting will be greater and if it is used for multiple people, the magic's effects will be lowered.
EFESTAÞ – HASTEN!, NULL ELEMENT
Playing a fast-paced, upbeat song Brae is capable of quickening a listener's movements, blessing them with somewhat enhanced reflexes and faster thinking. The effects of this are minor and right now can only be concentrated on one ally but, if Brae refines it, should be able to apply to more people with greater effects.
SECONDARY SPECIALIZATION
DRÉAMCRÆFT – CRAFTING MAGIC, ARCHETIER
Just as an magic smith can forge a magic weaponry Brae can craft and repair stringed instruments capable of being used to play music and channel music. The components needed for making an instrument can differ and he will be capable of utilising different materials as his skill increases. Expectedly, tonewoods are typically used when making these instruments, as well as lean animal's guts for the strings or metal, but there could be magical variants of either discovered that could provide either aesthetic or magical effects to the instruments.
CRÆFTE – CRAFT!, NULL ELEMENT
Brae is able to utilise his magical skills to make a beginner level instrument. Right now, his skills in terms of creating these enchanted instruments are rather basic and thus the materials he is able to use are also limited. However, on becoming more skilled it is possible that his instruments could be enchanted with additional magical effects such as being impervious to some degree of physical damage.
WUDURÆ – CUTTING OF WOOD, PLANT
Brae has a basic level of determined between different kinds of wood. Primarily he can make distinctions between different kinds of tonewoods but further magical materials and types of woods are harder to identify, if not impossible, at this level. This also allows him to gather and cut wood.
