Devout One Eighty-seven MAY 2 | male celibate cleric | |
Brother Bernard |
★ APPEARANCE
This humble worshiper of the gods is a mere mortal. He is aged and it shows. Thankfully with potions, the man has been able to keep his health in an acceptable state, but he's never striven for more. There was no reason to: always sheltered in the walls of a church with everything he needed along with the favor of the gods. It's a comfortable, if simple, life he leads. As such, he has become rather rotund, but Bernard has found this suits him. A large, jolly, old man--who better to come to with your worries?
He is always seen in more or less the same thing: simple, hooded robes that he wears to worship, to his chambers, on rare occasions out in public. The only variation would be in the pale color (beige, mint green, or powder blue). He may adorn it with a vest or pendant or the like, but these are not common appearances. The robes keep Bernard rather warm, so the necessity for anything more is simply not there. He wears glasses so thick it's a wonder he can see at all. Some have commented in the past that he could ask the gods to heal his sight, but the monk professes that he does need the vision of a youth to do his good work, he has gotten along perfectly well this far. All the hair on his head has been bleached pure white for quite a while now. He has stopped bothering with it and the stuff pokes out to make him look like a crazy man--with the mad beard to match. The only thing he always carries on his person is a walking stick. Well, it's more than a walking stick: it's a gracefully carved staff of healing blessed by a god. Bernard believes it empowers his curative magic.
★ PERSONALITY
Though he will profess the magnificence of the gods at every turn, evangelism isn't Bernard's focus. He believes that people will benefit more from his healing touch than his unskilled words. He is not trained as a preacher, but would agree that believing in the gods of light is much better than denying their existence. He's very easy to get along with as his only goal in life is to help others. He will not force anything on another being (provided that they are not doing harm to others) and will even sacrifice his own emotions and well-being for that of his charges. If you are causing harm or discontent, however, you will quickly find yourself under the wrath of this usually jolly cleric. He may not have very powerful magic by most standards, but that cane of his can cause quite a bump on one's head. He can prove to be quite stubborn on occasion, too, so sometimes it's simply best to go along with it and let him down easy.
★ HISTORY
Bernard has been a healer for, oh, most of his life now. He's nearly lost track of the exact number of years in his old age. He was raised in the Church--The Church of the Divinities, of course. His family was religious, and he was happily placed in a Church run boarding school. After receiving his education, Bernard decided to continue his pursuit of the gods. He didn't really see it as a choice so much as what he was needed or destined to do. Perhaps even encouraged by the gods to do. He would travel where he was needed to do the good work, learning skills as he went. When ordained as a cleric, Bernard was asked to give up his family name. There isn't really much to say about this man, even with his decades of experience. Years in monasticism taught him the values and practices he holds today. But unfortunately those years do not make a very interesting story.

★ MAGIC
PRIMARY SPECIALIZATION
CLERICALISM (support)
Growing up in the Church and worshiping the gods near ceaselessly, Bernard has learned some simple spells to help others. As men and women of the cloth, all clerics learn healing magic, but Bernard also calls on the power of the gods.
HEAL (light)
Any clergyman will know this spell. Easy to learn and easy to use, one must simply channel their magic to the palms which will glow and heal a body. This spell will only work on living creatures of good, but can mend a good deal of damage. It has its limits, however, and the most that can be healed at this level are fractured bones and non-fatal illnesses. Bernard calls upon Saighe to use this spell.
BLESSING OF THE GODS (null - divine)
Due to his devout practices, the gods allow Bernard to call upon them on occasion for him to use their powers to benefit another. With the spell, he is allowed to call forth one of three gods randomly to bestow a gift. Fionactar will heal some wounds or remove a poison, Lionach will enchant a target's weapon to deal extra light damage for one turn (or will create a one-use sword of pure light if no weapon is equipped), and Geapall will protect the target from one beginner offensive spell (or intermediate dark element spell). These gods only favor light and goodness, so this spell cannot bless those with evil or dark alignments.
DISPEL (light)
A simple magic cancelling spell. Bernard can use this to remove one magical effect caused by a spell (e.g. spell shield or multi-turn drain) from any living creature near him, including himself. At this level, only simple effects can be dispelled (those caused by beginner level spells or intermediate dark element spells). Bernard will call upon the goddess Ceartaia in his incantation for this spell, hoping to invoke her association with balance.
SECONDARY SPECIALIZATION
HERBAL ALCHEMY (crafting)
Over many years, Bernard has practiced potion-making. He has learned quite a few recipes and uses his skills to support his healing talents.
BREW POTION OF LIGHT (light)
Bernard has the knowledge to make any single effect potion so long as it has some relation to the light element. It may be a limiting factor, but it works just fine for his intentions. That also means, though, that his creations will have no effect on those who use dark magic. He asks the goddess Crulobh to bless his potions.
GROW (plant)
Herbs are essential to potion-making, so Bernard has always done his best to set aside a space to grow the ingredients. This spell can be used to age a plant to the point where it is ready for harvest. It can make a seed sprout, or grow a flower or other useful part from an existing plant.
