WARLOCK OF THE WISPWOOD TWENTY TWO September 24 | MALE HETEROSEXUAL HERBALIST | |
NAME MCNAME |
★ APPEARANCE
Maaren is a slight young man of medium stature. Due to his paled skin and murky eyes, one might assume him to be sickly, especially after learning that he can hardly use his arms and seeing how bundled up he usually is. The young man typically wears a dark violet headband around his head, but not over his thick blonde hair. A matching violet scarf is wrapped around his neck and drapes over his shoulders and falls down his back. It is held on by a golden pin, and Maaren likes to bury his face from the nose down in the thick folds of the scarf. On a normal day, the boy wears a long black shirt and khaki colored slacks. It is nothing too spectacular, but at least the headband and scarf offer a pop of color. Due to his curse, Maaren’s arms usually fall limp at his side. His hands are stone cold, and he has trouble bending his fingers. In order to hold his staff, he has to rest it in the crook of his arm, as he can hardly hold it in his hands. When he uses his magical abilities, he does not move his arms, as most of the spells are triggered by verbal commands, and sometimes a tilt of his head. However, his eyes, usually a dull gray or grayed orchid, slowly turn a deep red whenever he uses his powers.
★ PERSONALITY
When you shift from being a normal human being to being a Hexer, the process is gradual but one can notice the change from bright and cheerful to dull and apathetic. Maaren isn’t completely emotionless, but he certainly feels less than he would like to. It is a constant struggle to keep that last warm piece of his heart from freezing over completely. Because of this, he forces himself to do good things from returning a lost coin pouch to killing the evils in the forest. While he cannot feel satisfaction from completing these tasks, Maaren knows that he is doing something right. Sometimes though, the right answer is not clear cut, and as he cannot even get a “gut feeling” on what course of action would be better to take, the boy doesn’t always make the “right decision.” He also doesn’t always use the best methods to achieve an end. Black Magic and curses are frowned upon to begin with (with both wizard society and human society of course), but Maaren at least wants to make something good out of this curse of his. Generally speaking, he has good intentions for the sake of having good intentions. He can’t bring himself to care, but some part of him knows that he should.
Outwardly, Maaren tries to hide the dreadful effects of his chilling curse. He dons a smile and will force a dry laugh or two for the sake of not scaring off companions. Though, he’s usually still a quiet fellow. In this way, he is very logical, knowing full well that he couldn’t survive the Labyrinth without companions. Logic trumps emotions in every situation, as Maaren doesn’t have many emotions left to rely on. He is also very curious for the sake of obtaining new knowledge. When you can’t rely on “gut feelings,” you have to rely on instincts and logic. Learning or knowing as much as he can about a situation or the people around him helps Maaren to make what he considers the proper decision. If he doesn’t know enough about a situation or topic, Maaren can be rather gullible, especially with those who have mastered the art of rhetoric. If they sound knowledgeable and convincing, well then they must be right.
★ HISTORY
Maaren used to be a normal human. He lived in a small village, one that survived by hunting and gathering. Compared to some humans, they were a little less advanced, which was to be expected for they were far from the grand cities. Maaren was taught to gather and cultivate herbs and other edibles from his mother, while his father, like many of the men, went out into the forest to hunt for meat. But, one day, Maaren's father was in an accident, and broke his legs. Without his legs, he could not hunt, and winter was close upon them. Maaren's family would starve without more meat for the winter.
Desperate, Maaren went out into the forest, hoping to maybe make his way to a village with a doctor that could help. Instead he came upon a small hut that didn't seem to be deserted. Inside was a kind older woman, who offered to help Maaren with his family's troubles. She appeared to be an herbalist herself, as she had many dried herbs hanging from the walls of her little cottage. The woman offered Maaren medicine in a small vial that she promised would heal his father's injury. In exchange, all Maaren had to do was come back a couple times a week and help her out with chores.
Returning to the village, Maaren presented his father with the medicine, and in a few short days his leg was miraculously healed. Maaren completed his end of the deal, and went out to visit the woman in the woods. He dusted her shelves and helped her pick herbs. After about a month, as winter finally began to creep in, Maaren visited for one last time. The woman offered him a scarf for his troubles, to help shield him from the cold. However, upon wrapping the scarf around his throat, Maaren felt a chill run through his body, and felt his arms go numb. The old woman smirked, and faded away.
Maaren realized his mistake. She was the Witch of the Wispwood, who Maaren thought was only a character in fairy tales that parents told their children so they wouldn't wander into the woods. But she was real, and she cursed him. He ran back to his village, hoping to find help, but when the villagers learned of his curse, and of his new dark powers, they feared him. His family, while they still loved their son, feared the threats of the villagers, and turned him out into the cold as well.
Maaren didn't mind. He knew he would have, and that he should have minded, but he no longer did. He hated the Witch that cursed him, and hated the humans that shunned him. All he could do was find a place where he could be alone, and survive in peace. As much as he disliked being around other magic users, Maaren knew that was the only place he belonged now, and Dorcha Hollow became his new home.

★ MAGIC
PRIMARY SPECIALIZATION | WARLOCK (Dark Supportive)
Maaren uses dark based supportive magic. While he does not primarily know spells that help allies, Maaren's curse in turn taught him curses that sap away the will and strength of his enemies.
WITHERING HAZE
A thick, black, haze seeps out from the ground and surrounds a group of enemies as long as they are close together. The haze saps away their strength, and makes their attacks less effective. The haze dissipates after a short amount of time (never lasts longer than a post).
BLINDING SHADOWS
Long, paper thin shadows that are shaped like hands reach up from the ground and wrap around the head of an enemy, blinding them for a short while (two posts).
ENTANGLING SHADOWS
Thin, wispy black tendrils sprout from the ground and wrap themselves around an enemy's legs, holding them in place for a short while (two posts).
INKWALL
By waving one's arm in any direction they please, they can create a solid, shadowy wall from their fingertips. This black shadow wall is large enough to shield the user from one side of their choosing. If two squeeze close together, it could be large enough to shield both. The wall, at lower levels is thin, and would do little against physical attacks, but it can be used to soak up the damage of some spells. Of course, spells of the light variety can pierce straight through it, and higher levels spells will easily break through the wall as well. Beginner level spells can be blocked most of the time, intermediate spells can have their damage reduced, and advanced spells are likely to have their full effect. The wall stands for as long as the user stays still and concentrates, but it can only be sustained in this way for two posts at most.
SECONDARY SPECIALIZATION | HERBALIST (Crafting)
Maaren knows a little about tending for herbs, and thus tries his best to use it as a calming distraction. With his knowledge of herbs, Maaren can grow and harvest them properly, as well as know the proper locations to find them.
HERBALIST EYES
Upon using this spell, Maaren's eyes glow green. This allows him to locate herbs easier, granting him more herbs at the end of a hunting thread (1-2 extra).
HERBAL EXTRACTION
Without properly preparing an herb for consumption, Maaren can drain a small amount of its power to use a weak effect that the herb may grant an item once crafted. This amount is very small, because the herb is still in an unrefined state. Once this spell is used, the herb is rendered unusable.
